Hardwood Floor Preparation – What to Expect

Having new wood floors installed or having your existing floors refinished is an exciting time as long as you know how to prepare for it.  It is an extremely messy & dusty process that sometimes clouds the experience and can turn it into a nightmare!  We want to help you minimize that nightmare and make it a process that is as pleasurable as possible.

The following is a list of things to do to prepare for our arrival:

  • Clear off countertops and walls of everything in rooms where work is being done.
  • Move all furniture into a room where no work is being done.  Guy’s Floor Service does not move furniture.
  • Cover all moved furniture in adjacent rooms. (Precaution only, the plastic will contain the majority of the dust).
  • Clear out all closets and floors in pantries. You do not need to empty cabinets, they will be covered.
  • Remove all computer and television hardware and cords.
  • Have any prep work done not included in your proposal as indicated to your estimator.  (i.e., removal of existing floors, baseboards, etc.)
  • Place old towels or newspaper in the heat vents to trap dust from getting into your vents –DO NOT push towels or paper down too far, though!
  • Keep your home warm, about 70 degrees to promote a quicker dry time.
  • Dry time is about 8-9 hours per coat, on each coat and stain day.  Please stay off the floors on day of the stain completely.  After the 2nd and final coats are dry you can walk on the floors with stocking feet.
  • Please note: Finishes do have a strong odor and customers with allergies, smell sensitivities or small children may want to vacate the home during the staining and finishing process.
  • Furniture can be moved back 24 hours after final coat. Please use caution; floors are not fully cured for 5 – 7 days.  Please leave rugs off for 5 – 7 days.
  • Expect a mess!

Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions or comments as to how we can make our services better.  Thank you for your business.
